Technical questions (FAQ)

Security

How can I improve security on my computer?

What recourse do I have against cyberattack?
When it comes to conversations on the Web, Vidéotron has no right to intervene unless someone is being seriously harassed by one of our subscribers and this keeps the network from running smoothly. If you receive any threats, contact the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the Sûreté du Québec (Quebec's provincial police force) or local police. Any or all of these bodies will investigate your case.

If you are a victim of mass mailings from a Vidéotron customer (e.g. mail bombing, spam) or you receive programs that cause your computer to crash (nukes, D.o.S. or Trojan horses), we can only intervene if you send us the e-mail in question (complete with headings) or the log generated by your security software. If you would like to lodge a complaint related to a cyberattack, please send all information to abuse@videotron.ca

Connecting

Can I connect two computers to a single cable modem?
As long as you do not want both computers to connect to the Web at the same time, you can alternate your connection to the modem between the two computers. If you need simultaneous access for multiple computers, you can subscribe to a second IP address on your modem for $19.95/month. For this type of access, you will need to connect your two computers to a network via a hub. You may configure your local area network (LAN) any way you like.

Please note that each add-on IP address (you can have up to 2 additional IP addresses) includes 3 additional gigabytes of download traffic (from the Web to your computer) over and above the basic 6 GB you get with your package.

How do I connect the cable modem to my computer?
The most commonly used (and cheapest!) way to connect your cable modem to a computer is Ethernet 10BaseT technology. Your system must include a network card. A twisted pair cable connects your Ethernet card to the cable modem with RJ-45 connectors similar to standard telephone wires.

How do I add or change an email address?
To add new email aliases, you can contact us by email with three choices (in order of preference) for each alias you would like to add.

Speed

Is my upload speed the same as my download speed?
No. The vast majority of our customers use the Web mainly to receive (or download) data. Therefore, we built our network to concentrate more resources where they are needed most.

We are committed to ensuring constant high-quality access for all our customers. That's why we have limited upload speed to avoid users saturating the bandwidth, thereby reducing the sending capacity (and even access to the network) for other users.

E-mail

Is it possible for me to receive email not addressed to me?
No two subscribers can have the same email address. However, from time to time, messages do get sent to the wrong person. Your email address could be almost identical to another one. More often than not, the sender has just made a typo.

If you receive email due to this type of error, follow the same procedure as you would for postal mail: simply reply to let the sender know that s/he made a mistake when entering the address. If the sender receives no reply from you, s/he will never know that the email did not reach the proper recipient.

How can I block unwanted email?
Advertisements received via email are commonly called spam. Senders of this type of message may have obtained your email address through a newsgroup, an address book, a list compiled from online surveys, etc.

The best way to deal with spam is to report them directly to the Internet Service Provider concerned. Vidéotron offers no technical support when it comes to reporting spam. You may want to use a specialized utility like spam Cop.

We recommend you find out more about spam. You may also change your email address at any time by contacting Customer Service.

How can I sort my email when I have more than one address?
You get three email addresses with your subscription. These addresses are aliases that all receive email in your mailbox. When you go get your messages in your Inbox, you receive email for all your aliases. If you use Internet Mail, Outlook Express or Netscape Messenger, you can sort your messages as they come in and have them automatically forwarded to individual mail folders.

For sending mail, most software (except for a few packages, such as Netscape Messenger and Outlook Express) only allows you configure a single return address at a time. Every time email is sent, each user must therefore change the name and address so his/her contact information will appear in the message. We offer private mailboxes for $3 each per month. Each private box has a different password from the one you use to access your main account.

Miscellaneous

How can I find out how much time I've spent on the Net this month?
If you've opted for a 7-hour or 45-hour monthly package, you can check how many hours you've spent online. The Monthly Usage section tells you how many hours you've used since the beginning of the current billing month.

If you have unlimited access, there is no way to calculate how many hours you surf the Net. However, you can download a timer program that keeps track of how much time you spend online. Click here to find one. We do not offer technical support for such programs, but they are fairly easy to install and use.
