Installing the USB interface on Windows 98 and Windows Millenium

If you plug the SMC USB adapter into your USB port and nothing happens, your operating system most likely has problems managing the USB port. Please go to the Troubleshooting section at the end of this page.

The driver (SMCUSB.SYS) on the SMC diskette was designed to work with the EZ Connect USB Fast Ethernet adapter, SMC2202USB/ETH.

The driver (SMCUSB.SYS) meets "Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) 5.0" standards, and can be used with the Microsoft Windows 98, Windows Millennium and Microsoft Windows 2000 operating systems.

  1. Plug the USB SMC2202USB/ETH adapter into one of your computer's USB ports.

  2. Power on your computer and launch Microsoft Windows.

  3. When Microsoft Windows displays the Add New Hardware Wizard window with the EZ USB/Ethernet Converter" component, click on Next".

  4. Select Search for the best driver for your device. (Recommanded).
    Click on Next.

  5. Insert the SMC2202USB/ETH Super Disk diskette into your floppy disk drive (A:) OR put the install disk Take the lead with cable from Vidéotron in your CD-ROM drive.

  6. Select Specify a location and type A:\ or D:\OUTILS\SMC\USB in the Add New Hardware Wizard window (provided that D:\ is the letter representing your CD-ROM drive).

  7. Click on Next.

  8. Windows will display EZ Connect USB/Ethernet Converter in the Add New Hardware Wizard window.

  9. Click on Next. Windows will copy the driver (SMCUSB.SYS) from your A: drive to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, and the file (SMCUSB.INF) to the C:\WINDOWS\INFdirectory.

  10. If your Internet protocol (TCP/IP) is already set up on the system, please go to step 13. If not, click on OK in the window shown below.

  11. In some cases, Windows may not find the driver because it tries to retrieve it from the last location specified.

  12. Type in the appropriate path to your floppy drive A:\ or to your CD-ROM drive D:\OUTILS\SMC\USB (provided that D:\ is the letter representing your CD-ROM drive). Then click on OK.

  13. Put your Windows disk in your CD-ROM drive.

  14. In some cases, Windows may not find the driver because it tries to retrieve it from the last location specified.

  15. Type in the installation directory on the Windows CD-ROM, D:\WIN98 (provided that D: is the letter representing your CD-ROM drive).

  16. When Windows displays EZ Connect USB/Ethernet Converter again in the Add New Hardware Wizard window, click on Finish.

  17. Remove the disks from your A:\ and CD-ROM drive, and click Yes to restart your computer.

  18. After you've restarted your computer, open the Control Panel (on the Start menu: Start / Settings / Control Panel).

  19. Under the Device Manager tab in System, make sure there is no question mark or exclamation mark beside EZ Connect USB/Ethernet Converter and Universal serial bus controller.

  20. Close the System Properties window and click on Network.

  21. On the Configuration tab, select Windows Logon under Primary Network Logon and click on OK.

  22. You may be prompted to insert the Windows CD into your CD-ROM drive.

  23. Click Yes to restart.

TROUBLESHOOTING

To detemine if the USB port is properly set up and configured for your operating system:

  1. Right-click the My Computer icon on your Desktop.

  2. Select Properties.

  3. Click on the Device Manager tab.

  4. If Universal serial bus controller is not on the list:

    1. The USB port or manager is not installed on your system.

    2. Contact the retailer or manufacturer of your system for technical support to set up the USB port.

  5. If Universal serial bus controller is on the list:

    1. Click on the plus symbol (+) to the left of Universal serial bus controller.

    2. Under Universal serial bus controller

    3. Double-click USB Root Hub.

  6. Under the General tab, check to make sure the device is working properly.
