A broken smartphone, or worse, a stolen one, is never good news. In a business environment, a damaged or missing device is more than just an inconvenience. Incidents like these can slow down operations, make it harder for field teams to do their jobs, and lead to unexpected costs. However, a mobile device protection program for your business can help you quickly address the issues that arise when these situations occur.
It's hard to imagine the workday without a functioning smartphone. These devices have become essential multitasking tools, enabling employees to access company platforms, authenticate securely, communicate efficiently, and more. When a device is damaged, lost, or stolen, it can have a direct impact on both individual efficiency and productivity, as well as on the organization's overall performance.
What is the difference between a manufacturer’s warranty and a protection plan?
The manufacturer's conventional warranty and the protection plan share the same objective: protecting your investment. However, they do not cover the same risks or situations. The two products are nevertheless complementary. The manufacturer's warranty protects against issues that should have functioned properly from the outset, while the protection plan covers what may happen over the course of use, especially in a work environment where devices are often heavily used.
The manufacturer’s warranty is included with the purchase of the device and primarily covers manufacturing or operating defects during the coverage period, such as a problem with the battery or an internal component, for example. It is limited to electrical and mechanical failures for the specified term. The Mobile Device Protection Program for Businesses, on the other hand, is optional and designed to cover unforeseen events and certain specific risks associated with using the device in a business environment. It can also extend the coverage provided by the manufacturer’s warranty, depending on your needs.
What are the most common types of incidents in businesses?
- A cracked or broken screen
This is probably, by far, the most common type of damage. A drop onto a concrete or asphalt surface is often enough to crack the screen, which can affect readability, touch accuracy, and even the proper functioning of the device.
- Water or moisture damage
A spilled coffee on a desk or a phone dropped into water: it happens more often than you might think. Incidents like these can damage the internal components of virtually any electronic device (and put a damper on the workday!).
- A lost or stolen phone
During transit, while visiting a client, or at an event, the risks of loss or theft are very real. Beyond the cost of replacement, these incidents can also raise concerns related to data security. That's why it's important to adopt best practices to help secure your employees' mobile devices.
What does the Videotron Business Mobile Device Protection Program cover?
Our partner, Likewize, which administers the Program, offers three competitively priced plans. The first two apply to new and certified refurbished Android and Apple mobile phones, while the third is available exclusively for new Apple devices. As with all protection plans, certain limitations and exclusions apply. For example, normal wear and tear, paint chipping, and screen scratches are not covered.
Basic Protection Plan
This plan covers accidental damage resulting from handling, including those all-too-common liquid spills, as well as damage to the front screen glass. It also covers mechanical or electrical failures that occur after the manufacturer's warranty has expired. Up to two claims may be approved within a 12‑month period, starting from the date of the first claim.
Peace of Mind Protection Plan
This plan includes everything covered under the Basic Protection Plan, plus coverage for loss and theft. A total of four incidents are covered, of which up to two may be related to accidental damage resulting from mishandling, or to a mechanical or electrical breakdown or malfunction. The other two may be related to the loss or theft of the covered device within a 12‑month period.
Peace of Mind Protection Plan with AppleCare Services
This is the most comprehensive plan of the three, and it is designed by Apple. Unlike the two previous plans, coverage for screen damage applies to both the front and back glass. Claims for accidental damage and hardware malfunctions are unlimited, and up to two approved claims for loss or theft are allowed within any consecutive 12‑month period.
When should you consider adhering to a mobile device protection program?
- Your devices are essential to day-to-day operations
When smartphones are used to communicate with customers, access cloud-based systems, manage appointments, or process requests in real time.
- Some employees are frequently on the move
Devices used by employees who work in the field are more exposed to drops, loss, theft, and accidental damage than those used by office-based staff.
- The company owns multiple expensive or recently purchased devices
A protection plan can help make costs more predictable and reduce the risk of unexpected expenses when an organization manages a large number of mobile devices.
Integrate mobile protection into your business strategy
The more central mobile devices are to your operations, the more a protection plan can become a valuable risk management tool. Budget predictability, business continuity, and simplified incident management are just some of the many benefits, regardless of the industry you work in.
